Gown is true couture: ivory silk with beading and lace embellishment and finished by hand with lace facing on all seams. Dress was made in 1970 after a design worn in the early 19th century.
The princess line silhouette in an Empire style features a high neck ruffled collar with hand appliqued beadwork that continues as a panel down the center front; 42 covered buttons close the back and all inside seams are edged in lace.
Gown has long fitted sleeves with pleated, ruffled cuffs. Hemline carries a 4" gathered flounce with a short train.
The silk, called peau de soie (literally, skin of silk) is rarely seen today.
Because this is genuine couture, it isn’t possible to give a size in the ordinary sense, but 2, 4, and 6 sized women would fit.
